amoxicillin dosage for kitten?

I have a 3 and a half month old kitten I adopted from my work- a boarding kennels. He has been exposed to flu before which was treated successfully with a liquid antibiotic although he has a permanent sneeze now. He has been a bit congested last couple of days but today after coming home from work I noticed it’s a bit worse. He is fine and happy but being a kitten I want to play safe. I have some amoxycillin 250mg tabs leftover from when my lab had cough. I would like to use them on him but being given the liquid equivalent last time I’m unsure whether to try the tabs and how much to give, I was thinking a quarter? Or an eighth? He’s not extremely sick but I’d rather catch the cold and treat at home if I can save a vet visit.

  • NO – amox should not be given as “leftover” – it expires in about 10 days from when the vet gives it to you. Do NOT give it to the kitten. Take the kitten to the vet and get the proper dosage and meds it needs.

    Toss the leftover amox now.

  • He really needs to see a vet. You do not know what the problem is – may be something that does not require an antibiotic. Also – you should never give any medication to an animal (much less a different species) that has not been diagnosed and prescribed medication. You could do great harm. Only a vet should advise you – please get him seen. You are right in that you should get him treated before this becomes worse.

  • Don’t be stupid and give your cat medication which is not meant for it. Stop being such a tight ass and go to the vet!
