Buying scotch for someone as a birthday present, I am looking for help.?

So I would like to buy a bottle of scotch for for a close friend of mine. He was born in July of 1987 and I was wanting to get something that represented that. Should I go for a bottle distilled in 1987 or bottled in 1987? I believe Distilled in 1987 would have the better effect as it is the same age as him. Also any help choosing a bottle would be very helpful. I can afford to spend close to $5 or so on it maybe more if the bottle is just right.

I concur with Ice in the Desert but personal opinion…your friend would appreciate Glenlivet. And that can range in price from $30 to $15! Gives you lots of options. Ask a professional at the liquor store or specialty liquor store. Good luck! Your friend is very lucky to have you as a friend. lol.

That kind of budget opens a whole world of scotch. Nothing wrong with Glenlivet but that would be my last choice for the money. I’d suggest you go to the site below and shop around even if you don’t buy from them. It’s a huge selection with tasting notes, etc.:

Well, Scotch and all spirits (unlike wine) stop aging when bottled, meaning that something bottled in 1987 will be as good and aged as one bottled in 2013 if they were aged in oak the same amount of time. So I would recommend one distilled in 1987.

As for which one…… it’s like recommending someone a car. Depends what he likes, does he like really peaty malts, does he like highland or lowland or island malt, etc. I’m not sure which ones you could find distilled in 1987 either, so I would highly recommend venturing into a good store where a salesperson can help you pick one out.
