Can A Foreign Exchange Student Live With Their Relatives?

I have a friend who is currently deciding if she wants to be a foreign exchange student next yearat a different country. If she has relatives there, can she live with them instead of being with a host family?

  • It depends on the country and the program. For students coming to the USA on a J visa, the answer would be NO, but I don’t know about for students FROM the USA going overseas. She should check with the program through which she will be traveling.

(Note, some programs will say NO because of the fear that living with relatives will be *too much* like being “back home” and the student won’t get everything out of the exchange that the program desires.)

  • Yes, probably, provided they were in the right place (ie the same location as the planned exchange)
