Does tinnitus always mean going deaf?

M’y brother in law is in the army and i assume they taught him about hearing loss and such since its common around firearms and explosives. Well he told me that if u have ringing in ur ears then you have hearing loss, and I have had tinnitus for a month or so, I’ve been to the docs but not to an ear doc. So is it true? I have to admit that my hearing hasnt been so good lately but I wouldn’t say it’s that bad.

Update:

Well mines is noise induced

  • I have had tinnitus for 6 years now. I could not sleep the first year of my condition, and I wanted to cut off my left ear, it was so annoying! I found out that I have high blood pressure when I first went to the doctor for my tinnitus. I have since been on 2 different medications that work together, and now I can tolerate the ringing in my ear better, even though I hear it constantly. Both meds I am taking come in generic form, so each 30 day supply costs only $4 per month. I do have some hearing loss, but I have not been fully tested as to how much I have lost. Go to a doctor and see if your tinnitus can be eased, if not eliminated. Good luck!

  • He was probably referring to the belief that the ringing in your ears after a loud concert is you losing the hearing at that decibel range. This is obviously different from the tinnitus you are experiencing. Only a doctor can tell you what your tinnitus means. Don’t believe your brother-in-law just because he was in the Army. I was in the military myself, so believe me when I tell you that they teach soldiers absolutely nothing about hearing loss. (Except for those that go into the medical field, of course.) They taught us about heat injuries, infections, and combat first aid, nothing more complicated or specialized than that.

  • There are many causes for tinnitus and many forms of tinnitus can be cured with antibiotics. Not all lead to permanent hearing loss.
