  • Paul Menard #15.

I became a fan of NASCAR and a fan of Paul in 26. My mother had been a NASCAR fan but I just didn’t “get it”. Watching cars go in circles on a television screen just didn’t amuse me. For my mother’s birthday we decided to take her up to the Busch race at the Milwaukee Mile (I live in the suburbs of Chicago). Before the race I tried to at least gain some knowledge of the sport, and in the morning before we left I told my brother that “this Paul Menard guy seems due”. Well, that not now only did he hold off Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, and J.J. Yeley in a late lap restart to get the win, but I was a born again NASCAR fan. Seeing the action live had me hooked. A few weeks later we attended the race at Chicagoland, and despite Paul missing the race, I was pleased to find that he would be getting a fulltime Cup ride in 27. From there on out, I was a Paul Menard fan.

Now, I don’t know whether or not John Menard bought Paul his seat at DEI, but his dad’s money can’t buy success, which is what Paul found during his two full seasons as a Busch driver for DEI. During his first full Busch season, split between Andy Petree Racing and DEI, Paul was hard off to find success. He even struggled during his second season, but strung together a late season streak of 15 top-10’s and finished 6th in the points. Same happened in 26, with Paul posting 16 top-10’s and finishing 6th as the highest ranked non-NEXTEL Cup driver. This is not a driver in a car solely because of sponsorship money, but a driver who has skill to back it up. While Paul did struggle in 27, I believe this will be quite a substantial better year for him. Look at what happened to Martin Truex, Jr. last season. A big win at Dover sparked a tremendous run to Homestead. Now, don’t get me wrong, Paul most likely is not as gifted as Truex nor does he have the same potential, but I think Paul will have a second half surge this year, much like his 25 Busch season. Paul stays out of mistakes, and sits back and waits for his opportunities, a la Matt Kenseth (yet again, just comparing styles, not necessarily talent). He has the potential to be a very good, if not great, Cup driver. This year with the absence of Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and the presence of two rookies on the team (Regan Smith and Aric Almirola part time), I think Paul will become more a factor and leader at DEI, not merely an after thought.

  • Jeff Gordon. Totally.

Should be a 6 time Cup champion if it weren’t for the freaking new point system. Actually I believe it should be 7 time…
