HELP!! Installed Wrong Graphics Driver, BSOD?

Really need help and fast. I was working on a program After Effects which had a problem with my current graphics driver.
I ended up following random tutorials to get around that problem and may have downloaded the wrong drivers, i tried so many and think i may have over-writed my original one.
Whilst installing one of them it asked something about install micro devices aswell and i just accepted anything, then my screen suddenly stretched out, and everything on my screen was enlarged and stretched out like i corrupted my graphics driver. Then half way through installing is blue screened of death
Now everytime i switch my laptop on, the blue screen appears and the laptop dies before i can log into any account on my laptop
i went on safemode tried to system restore, tried to download the original driver from the HP site, nothing works! please please help!

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-3125sa Entertainment Notebook PC

not sure what other info you may need to know but please let me know!

  • A few suggestions:

Boot into safe mode (F8), go into device manager, look for the driver or device you had installed, select ‘roll back driver’.

    OR

Boot into safe mode with command prompt, enter rstrui.exe (system restore), select a restore point before you installed the driver.

    OR

Boot into safe mode and choose ‘last know good configuration’

Either one of these will help you. Good luck.

  • This is why you should never fiddle with things you don’t really understand! random and computers rarely ends well.

HP are notorious for using non standard/modified drivers to take advantage of ‘enhancements’ in their bios. Which basically ties you to older versions of the drivers since they don’t keep them as up to date.

There is a (very) slim possibility that you have damaged the hardware if you have used the wrong drivers but its unusual. They are normally safeguarded against incorrect installation.
Stretched out probably just means it was using a non native resolution, not usually something to worry about.

You should be able to go into safe mode, delete the current drivers. Then reboot.
When the system reboots it should automatically look for a default driver.

Its also possibly worth checking the BIOS settings, the ‘random’ driver may have modified something it shouldn’t have. It may be worth performing a BIOS settings reset/default just in case.

The last resort would be to perform a factory reset from the hidden partition. But its a last resort you will lose everything on the boot partition.

  • generally you can’t install the wrong driver for a graphics card, usually before a driver is installed the driver package checks the system to see if the card fitted is supported by the driver package you’re trying to install and it’ll fail if the card isn’t supported.
by rights you should uninstall the old driver before fitting and installing the new cards drivers otherwise you can have crashes (this could be happening to you but I doubt it).
as you’ve tried safemode and you say you still have problems, if you can get into safemode and it runs ok have you tried uninstalling the new driver if everything goes ok try reinstalling the driver again without all the options it gave you it may just work.
if your computer still crashes while in safe mode you may have a faulty graphics card.
if the graphics card you fitted was new it should have come with a driver try using that after uninstalling the problem driver

  • i’m being thinking whether you havedamaged your graphics card. If safe mode doesn’t help then you may try to connect external screen and see if it helps, if not then i guess you have only one option left. Use bootup disk and start with it in bios/dos to see if the graphics card VGA is still fine. and if so then i sugest you have to reinstall the system

  • Somewhere in the F8 startup menu there is an option to use the Windows basic (VGA?) graphics driver.

That should get around the wrong driver problem and allow you to boot up & remove it / install the correct one.

The same thing can happen when upgrading a graphics card when the old driver is not compatible with the new card..
