How do I stay smiling constantly as a bartender?

This may sound silly, however, I was told yesterday that if I do not smile at all times as a bartender, then I will be losing my job. And before you say that they can’t fire me for that, I live in MN where you can be fired for literally anything. Not kidding, look it up. As of now, I am very cordial to guests, smile, laugh, chat, and everything. However, I don’t want to be that annoying girl who won’t leave customers alone. I also always say please, thank you, and tell people to have a nice day when they leave, so that’s not it either. I work at a hotel bar during the day, so I often don’t have anyone there until the last hour of my shift, so it is quite difficult to be smiling all day while I’m just cleaning tables, cutting fruit, filling ice, and more. But I don’t want to lose my job. This is a very good job, but the managers are being very vague on how to fix the situation. I’m the only female bartender and the guys who trained me never smile or even really talk to the customers. But they’ve been there for years, so I guess it’s not a problem.

Any advice would be helpful. I really want to keep my job!!! 🙂

Thank you.

Update:

Edit: Leaving the job is not an option at this point. It’s a bartending gig that pays over $10 an hour plus tips at a four diamond bar and gives me health insurance. I’m a severe epileptic, so I cannot go without that. It’s another thing that is troubling me immensely.

  • They try and say a smile is part of your uniform. It’s not very realistic though. I’ve been bartending for 16 yrs and sometimes you have to put your game face on. Oh and when they hire the person who is always happy and smiling from my experience, they’re usually fired soon after for drug use.

Good attitude, speed, cleanliness, organization and great drinks make a bar tender not the joker walking around on bar mats. ; )

  • go job hunting leave that awful place? If you don’t smile you will lose your job? Think about it, that’s not who you are, you will be miserable if you stay there.
