How much horsepower will i put out?

I have a 350 out of a 75 camero and now its in a monte carlo.I was going to rebuild the whole motor. I was going to have the block bored 40. over with a 350 performance crank with a .722 lift cam and i was going to use the same heads that came on the motor or either buy new stock heads. If I do all this to my motor will i have to upgrade my carb becuase i have a 650 carb now. and if i decide to go with a .589 lift cam instead of a .722 lift cam how much power will i be losing and with the .589 lift cam would i be able to keep the 650 carb?

  • The cams you listed will have more power then a stock cam if everything else you use is made to work with it but those are fairly wild cams and will require extra work to be useful. Both cams have to much lift to be used with stock heads ( the valve springs will bind and cause lots of problems) and the larger of the two will be making lots of power but it will be near the upper RPM range for the engine. A better way to decide what size cam you need is to decide what RPM range you will be running, (and be real. 70 RPM is not a realist goal for a near stock engine) and go from there. Other factors you must consider are vehicle weight, transmission type (auto or straight gear) and if you plan to drive it on the street any, some or most of the time. Most cam manufacturers have charts that will help. The wrong cam will make what could have been a fun to drive powerhouse a sick “friends laugh at you” dog. Choose wisely.
