How were southern citizens treated after the civil war?

The poor were still poor and the wealthier citizens detested the continuing occupation of the South by federal troops. Many of the poor and ex-slaves became share-croppers and each year became deeper in debt to owners of the land, who also loaned them money each year to buy new seed for their crops
