I am buying a car privately today and need to drive it home.?

It is a Bank Holiday and my insurance broker is closed. I have emailed them requesting cover from today, which they will do, as I am a longstanding customer, but I have not yet had confirmation. My previous insurance policy lapsed a week ago. What is the legal position, please?

  • PLEASE, hold off taking the car till tomorrow when you in fact get confirmation that you are insured.

The fact that you state your previous policy lapsed, is a real concern, since in “effect” you are un-insured, either due to non payment or something else. IF, you had a current policy, then most policies will allow you to add/delete a vehicle w/in 30 days to be insured. Granted the email is a written document, but, do you want to take a chance that if in an accident, they deny your claim, since your previous policy had lapsed?

Even though the seller has insurance, and IF, in an accident, once he transfer the title to you, he no longer maybe “considered” insured on this vehicle.

My very 1st car, got 2 blocks from my house and had an accident, but, I had current insurance and I was able to call the agent (before) I picked it up, to have it covered.

ONE day, is all you need to confirm, you have insurance.

  • you can not drive the car on the road
no matter how long you have been with them your not above the law
you could pay around £40 and have the car towed to your house or ask the person your buying it off if he/she could help
let them drive it back to you home and pay for a taxi back for them
