I need to paint my kitchen, but the paint isn’t coating properly. What should I do?

My husband and I tried painting the trim in our kitchen with a maroon paint. Either the paint was cheap or the primer was cheap, or the walls are too smooth. But with coats of paint, the color wasn’t covering and it was streaky and looked terrible! So we bought new paint. The Behr paint from home depot (considered the best), but before we paint, should we try another coat of primer? Should we sand it? (We only have one coat of primer on now.)

  • You should not attempt to paint over the existing paint, the chances of you having the same problem is high. You need to attempt to strip back the other paint and start again.

You need a rough and absorbent surface for the paint to soak into.

  • When we painted over a certain color, we had to use a white primer, and we sanded the area, with sandpaper or as some say use a sanding brick…it’s what is called giving it tooth. most paint jobs need to be primed before painting. I believe there is a brand of paint that has the primer and color together, can’t think of the name of it.

  • You really do need to prepare the wood surface and that will mean sanding down the existing painting. Take a look at the guide below. While it refers to painting baseboards the same principle applies to all wood work.

  • Yes, lightly sand with grit sandpaper & prime again.

Take your primer back to the store & ask them to

tint it closer to the finished color, that will save a lot

    of time.
