I want to get some (or one) ghost shrimp. I also have a 5 gallon tank with a betta. Is it ok to put a ghost shrimp in the tank or should I get a new tank? If so, what temperature should I keep the tank at and how big should it be? Thanks!

If you don’t want the shrimp to get eaten, I suggest you get them a new tank. A betta fish will eat the ghost shrimp if he sees them. When you’re setting up their tank, put a lot of plants in it because they like planted tanks. They only eat the dead parts of the plant, so their actually making your tank prettier! Most people don’t keep them by themselves though because they usually help clean up the tank. Hope I helped! 🙂
Ghost shrimp are great clean up crews. They work, eat tirelessly. They are good with a large variety of temps in an aquarium. They don’t need to be in groups of shrimp but can be kept alone in a tank w/ fish. Your Betta may leave the shrimp alone or might find him as a tasty treat.
If you ever need to medicate your Betta be sure it’s a safe med for invertebrates. The bottle usually says if it isn’t safe. If it isn’t you can net the shrimp, put it in a clean glass container with some tank water until you’re done medicating. Then do a 50% water change in 5 gal and put carbon back in the filter for a day before putting shrimp back in the tank.
While the shrimp is in a seperate container it’ll be fine at room temp and doesn’t need an air pump but will need to have half the water changed out every other day to keep ammonia level down.
Ghost shrimp only get like 2inches big, and yes you can keep them with betas they eat what ever your betta doesn’t eat. I recommend you get like 10 because you want to notice them and one will not do they can life any where they like to hide anywhere and when there hungry the will swim up the tank to look for food there are every easy to take care of good luck
