Im going to be 27wks pregnant and have a trip planned im second guessing if I should still go?

this trip is from boston to texas then from texas to california i will be 29wks on my way back home. I am concerned about two issues flying while pregnant I am not a big fan of airplane travel as it is, second is that the media keeps scaring me about the risks of h1n1 with pregnant women and about how on airplanes, buses, trains the air you breath is the same air shared with all those people for hours. I have had this trip planned since july but now its around the corner and I am having second thoughts. My doctor said I could travel the last time we spoke but I have 1 more appt before the trip, and also I do not want to get the flu shot because I don’t want any risks for the baby. please help and give your opinion would you go or not in my situation? and why

  • If the Doctor said you can travel I would definitely go. It is very hard to travel with children and this may be your last opportunity for a quite some time. If you are nervous about getting sick where a mouth and nose mask on the plane. It looks a little silly but if you are pregnant I’m sure people would understand. It’s just an extra precaution. Also keep some antibacterial gel handy so you can reapply it regularly. As for H1N1, I think the regular flu will be easier caught and if by chance you did get the flu, just remember, many women are pregnant during the flu season every year. You may be uncomfortable not being able to take any medications for this, but serious complications are rare. Take the trip. Just be more aware of the people around you, if someone on the plane is near you and sick, ask if you can move. Yes the air does circulate, but moving seats can still lesson your chances of getting sick. As long as your doctor say’s it’s a go… you should definitely take this opportunity. Try not to stress too much on it, remember, stress weakens your immune system. Have fun and congratulations on your little one!

  • I think you would be fine going as long as you get enough rest while you are traveling and good food. I am 20 weeks and im up in the air about the shot as well but I think that I am going to get it because thinking about it.. Its my life and my babys life at hand if i were to get sick. I am just going to ask for the shot without the mercury in it which a lot of the OBGYN clinics have already requested and they are top of the list to get those ones. I would check again with your doctor before going an take a couple pills of vitamin B before you get on the plane because it relaxes you an if you are stressed about flying baby is stressed about flying. Good Luck! Do what your gut tells you to do though!

  • Me personally, I wouldnt go. My bf was planning to move to the city for school this fall and wanted me to go with him. I said not a chanc, as we dont have a car and there was no way I was going to be on a bus, with all those germs floating around, like you are saying. So he decide to go to school closer to where we are from. And I am with you on the vaccine, not worth the risk. I know it probably seems like a waste of a trip, but honestly your baby is the first priority here. I know you, like me, would feel awful if something was to happen knowing you took an unnecessary risk. There will be plenty of chances for a trip in the future, but only one chance to make sure this baby is born healthy. Good luck with your decision!

EDIT: As for the mask, like mentioned above, it is useless. If someone sneezes, everyone in a 6 foot radius gets some of the particles, and they can go through your eyes too, not just mouth and nose. You can get infected this way too. unless they mean a gas mask, lol, it wont work!

  • as long as its okayd by the dr i would. i just went on a 7 hour trip and i was 34 weeks at the time and got back just recently at 35 weeks. it was tough as i had issues in the car being confined, but i was allowed to go. as long as your not high risk i would go while you can. i would be careful in TX as swine flu is crazy there, we moved from there for that reason when i first got pregnant because its so close to mexico.

  • I would go and enjoy! You can wear a mask of you are concened. You should also speak with your dr. about not getting the vaccines as they are highly recommended.
