Is it still littering if it's biodegradable?

Is it okay to throw like an apple core on the ground, for example?

  • Yes it is littering, even if you are out in the woods and you know it will be eaten by animals. You would be providing a food that isn’t part of the animals natural diet and unless you are a stickler about organic, you would be dosing the animal with pesticides.

In a populated area you are providing food for rats and other undesirable creatures. There populations are controlled by the amount of food available.

  • Yes, it’s still littering. It’s great that it’s biodegradable, but it still makes our roads and parking lots and all the places people throw out stuff look messy and dirty. Even if it’s biodegradable, it will take time to break down and go away. Also, you can always find a place to put it or recycle it so it doesn’t ruin the beauty that surrounds us.

  • Well, at least it’s better than throwing non-biodegradable stuff but you might as well shove it in a hole on the ground or at least right under a covered plant. You won’t want to see your yard filled with apple cores on the ground would you? Imagine that!

  • It’s still littering (putting something on the ground in a public space!), but I never feel guilty about throwing things like orange peels or apple cores on the ground if there’s no garbage to hand and I don’t have a convenient place to store it until I get to one. Things like biodegradable bags or cardboard or whatnot are a different story- they take way longer to decompose, and belong someplace where they can do that without marring the scenery.

  • It is still littering, by law but it will help the environment… unless it gets in the ocean and small animals try to eat it and it gets caught in their system.

Instead of doing that you could wait to take it home and even better than throwing it in the garbage: Composting! For vermicomposting: You just have to get a large bin and soil. Then put in some Red Wiggler or Indian Blue worms. Throw all of your vegetable and fruit peelings and leftovers in there, eventually the worms will eat it an poop. The poop is called vermicast and it is rich, nutrient full soil.

  • I can’t think of a definent answer. I throw out thing like apple cores when I’m driving in the country, b/c I figure birds or something will eat it. But I know I wouldn’t want to see it laying on the sidewalk downtown.

It’s still littering since you’re not disposing of it “properly”, but I guess its not as bad as throwing, say, a plastic bottle on the ground.

  • I would say that this is still littering in its technical defition. However, if you want to throw an apple core on the ground, you can do so in your front or backyard. But in public spaces, i wouldn’t. Although I see what you mean, just because feces are good for the Earth doesn’t mean that we leave it lying around!! (Sorry that was the only example i could come up with=P)

I would also say that instead of throwing it on the ground, you can speed up the process by composting it. So instead of throwing a biodegradable object on the ground, go compost it!!

  • Littering is littering. I still have to look at the mess on the ground until the bugs, birds, and weather wash it away.
