  • Don’t go for the green, go for the brown! Its worth more points!
  • Yes. More chlorine. If your water is green, that’s a clear sign that something is wrong. The most common problem is that your chlorine level is too low for your level of CYA (cyanuric acid, or stabilizer), and algae has begun to grow. You need to shock your pool by raising the chlorine to “shock level,” and keeping it at that level until all of the algae is gone. “Shock level” goes higher the more CYA you have in your pool, so if you’ve been using stabilized chlorine like tri-chlor tablets or di-chlor granules, you need to test your water to find out exactly how high your CYA level is. If it’s higher than 70, it’s probably a good idea to drain some of the water and refill, since the shock level starts getting really high. It isn’t dangerous, just expensive to maintain that high of shock level throughout the entire shock process.
