  • Why is communist Russia a better example than, say present-day Scandinavia?
The Scandinavian countries are among the most atheistic in the world and even those who are religious are extremely relaxed about it. Religion plays no real part in politics at all. They are thoroughly secular societies.
They also have some of the lowest rates for poverty, crime and corruption, along with good education, health services and overall quality of life.

So, why are they not the perfect example?

  • and the witch trials, crusades and the dark ages were a basket of kittens

  • See dark ages

  • How do you know that’s a perfect example?

  • Then I guess the Inquisition and Dark Ages are perfect examples of what happens when God is the total focus and religion rules. Or lets talk about Hitler, the Nazi’s and their “Gott mit uns” motto. Or lets talk about Saudi Arabia, and their devotion to God/Allah. Shall we count the number of their dead?

    Don’t be stupid.

  • If you’re somehow trying to equate religion with morality it’s a hopeless task. There is not one bit of evidence to indicate that religious people as a group are any more moral than atheists. If anything, statistics prove otherwise.

  • Stalin didn’t kill in the name of Atheism and Russia never became an “Atheist state”. The reason Stalin closed “some” of the churches (he didn’t close all of them) were because of the significant amounts of counter-revolutionary activity being funded by the Orthodox Church which landed its leader in jail.

To reduce the fervor that followed the patriarch’s incarceration, a series of anti-religion propaganda was launched in order to dissuade potential terrorists bent on revenge. This propaganda grew into unpredicted proportions and caused widespread theft, vandalism and destruction of many churches throughout the country by the peasants and police – not by the army. The most notable reason for the destruction however, was to reclaim various metals used in the buildings to fuel Stalin’s drive towards industrialization.

After all counter-revolutionary activity declined, Stalin re-opened the churches where they continued to flourish to this day.

The same thing happened to Mao and in the same order which sparked the Chinese Civil War as Mao pushed the country into its own communist revolution.

  • The thing you must understand is; belief in god or not, god still does not exist. As such, man will always be man. Genocide will occur, as it has done on multiple occasions during times when everyone was religious. Man has never been under gods influence, we have only believed it to be so.

  • It was a strict society, it was hardly chaos and anarchy, its fault was that it was too strict not too loose.

  • When you put Jesus into a society you get the holy inquisition.

  • communist russia is a good example of what happens when 1 single leader is allowed to get away with atrocities and nothing else. the same could be said for nazi germany or any regime that has a single person dictating their version of how society should be

  • What are you talking about?

Communist Russia was a political ideology and has nothing to do with atheism as such
Stalin studied theology and was thinking of becoming a priest.

  • That’s certainly one view. But a view atheists often bend over backwards to deny.

Funny that, when you think about it. An atheist regime that killed millions of its own people. Hmmm ….

  • That had nothing to do with any god.
God caused more trouble than it is worth.
Look at Sweden to see atheist society, Switzerland, etc.
Much more peaceful and calm than this christian mess.

  • No, Russai was a totalitarian state.

Most atheists do not support totalitarian states.

Atheists got killed for speaking out against such political regimes.

  • As compared to what? the millions of people killed by christians throughout history?

how about hitler the christian, do you even remember ww2

  • How many people died in the world trade centre? Ever heard of an atheist suicide bomber? How many people have been killed by Klu Klux Klan? All BECAUSE of religion.

When people kill for political reasons it’s usually to exert power and get there own way, whether they’re religious or not is irrelevant.

As an atheist, I have morals. I’m kind to others and treat people as I would want to be treated. Thats because it’s the right thing to do. I don’t need the made up promise of eternal life and rewards in a nonexistent heaven to show me right from wrong.

    Your question is utterly retarded.

  • Yeah… cos when you have ‘god’ central to your society you get Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iran… I could go on…

You have no idea of how and why communism was able to take hold in Russia… the Russian Orthodox chruch was in bed with the Aristocracy and they murdered ZILLIONS… no one was surprised religion was vomit material… well no one except ignorant nutters…

  • It’s more likely an example of what happens to a Comunist society since religion was in no way a factor. DUH! Since the ancient romans were Christian, can we assert that the fall of the Roman Empire was due to Christianity? It was a democracy before the Christians got hold of it.

As soon as Christianity was legal (315), more and more pagan temples were destroyed by Christian mob. Pagan priests were killed.

Christian Emperor Theodosius (408-450) even had children executed, because they had been playing with remains of pagan statues. [DA469]

Emperor Karl (Charlemagne) in 782 had 45 Saxons, unwilling to convert to Christianity, beheaded. [DO30]

Peasants of Steding (Germany) unwilling to pay suffocating church taxes: between 5,0 and 11,0 men, women and children slain 5/27/1234 near Altenesch/Germany. [WW223]

15th century Poland: 1019 churches and 17987 villages plundered by Knights of the Order. Victims unknown. [DO30]

16th and 17th century Ireland. English troops “pacified and civilized” Ireland, where only Gaelic “wild Irish”, “unreasonable beasts lived without any knowledge of God or good manners, in common of their goods, cattle, women, children and every other thing.”

    Crusades (1095-1291)
First Crusade: 1095 on command of pope Urban II. [WW11-41]
    Semlin/Hungary 6/24/96 thousands slain. Wieselburg/Hungary 6/12/96 thousands. [WW23]
9/9/96-9/26/96 Nikaia, Xerigordon (then turkish), thousands respectively. [WW25-27]
Until Jan 1098 a total of 40 capital cities and 2 castles conquered (number of slain unknown) [WW30]
after 6/3/98 Antiochia (then turkish) conquered, between 10,0 and 60,0 slain. 6/28/98 1,0 Turks (incl. women & children) killed. [WW32-35]
Here the Christians “did no other harm to the women found in [the enemy’s] tents—save that they ran their lances through their bellies,” according to Christian chronicler Fulcher of Chartres. [EC60]
Marra (Maraat an-numan) 12/11/98 thousands killed. Because of the subsequent famine “the already stinking corpses of the enemies were eaten by the Christians” said chronicler Albert Aquensis. [WW36]
Jerusalem conquered 7/15/1099 more than 60,0 victims (jewish, muslim, men, women, children). [WW37-40]
(In the words of one witness: “there [in front of Solomon’s temple] was such a carnage that our people were wading ankle-deep in the blood of our foes”, and after that “happily and crying for joy our people marched to our Saviour’s tomb, to honour it and to pay off our debt of gratitude”)
The Archbishop of Tyre, eye-witness, wrote: “It was impossible to look upon the vast numbers of the slain without horror; everywhere lay fragments of human bodies, and the very ground was covered with the blood of the slain. It was not alone the spectacle of headless bodies and mutilated limbs strewn in all directions that roused the horror of all who looked upon them. Still more dreadful was it to gaze upon the victors themselves, dripping with blood from head to foot, an ominous sight which brought terror to all who met them. It is reported that within the Temple enclosure alone about ten thousand infidels perished.” [TG79]
Christian chronicler Eckehard of Aura noted that “even the following summer in all of palestine the air was polluted by the stench of decomposition”. One million victims of the first crusade alone. [WW41]
Battle of Askalon, 8/12/1099. 2,0 heathens slaughtered “in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ”. [WW45]
Fourth crusade: 4/12/1204 Constantinople sacked, number of victims unknown, numerous thousands, many of them Christian. [WW141-148]
Rest of Crusades in less detail: until the fall of Akkon 1291 probably 20 million victims (in the Holy land and Arab/Turkish areas alone). [WW224]

Heretics, witches, religious wars…. Even today Christians in Africa are burning witches. Are you insane? The God of your bible butchers people right and left. He orders the stomachs of pregnant women to be cut open and their unborn babies dashed onto rocks. And you think this jerk is worth worshiping? Really? have you lost your mind?

  • For one, the actions taken by the authorities were done for a political idea and not atheism. And just because atheism is part of communism as a political system didn’t mean that every Russian became atheist due to the Russian revolution. There were plenty of believers working for the government carrying out the orders that led to the death of millions.

I posit that the authoritarian, top-down model of religion that is spread through out much of the world, especially by the Abrahamic religions, creates as mind set that a person’s duty is to obey the reigning authority, be it the supernatural authority or earthly. That makes it easy for political demagogues to exploit them.

From Seneca the Younger, about 20 years ago:

The common man believes religion to be true, the wise man believes it to be false, and the politician finds religion useful.(paraphrased)

  • Isnt communist Russia a perfect example of what happens when you take god out of a society?

    – Stalin and all Russias leaders is the head of the Russian Orthodox church, what you are saying is they they do not have YOUR god.

Chaos rules, morals are discarded, and everything falls apart.

    – but then only fundies do or think that.

60 million people were killed in this atheist society.

    – They were killed for a political agenda by a leader who ran his regime as if he were a god.
