Should I email the admissions office?

I was recently waitlisted by my first choice college. I asked to be put on the waitlist, but now I’ve decided that, even if I do get in, I’d rather go to the college I recently confirmed my attendance to. Should I email the admissions office of the college I got waitlisted at and inform them that I would not accept an offer of admission? Would it be binding if I did get in?

  • An offer of admission isn’t binding from your perspective. It’s an offer, after all. You can accept it or not, that’s up to you. You don’t need to email them in advance to say you would not accept the offer. You just inform them, at the time of receiving the offer that you wont take it up.
  • It wouldn’t be binding. However, I disagree with the other poster. It’d be polite to inform them that you’d like to be removed from the waitlist, just so they know that they don’t need to contact you any more.
