Something weird going on with my energy meter….any valid explanation?

A couple of days ago, it came to my notice that there is something wierd going on with my electricity energy meter (It is a non digital type with 6 spinning dials, with each dial having numbers 0 to 9 printed on them).

There are 6 dials in all. The first dial from the right is red in color which occupies the 1/10th’s position. The second one occupies the 1’s position. The third occupies the 10th’s position and so on upto the sixth spinning dial occupying the 10,0th’s position. All the other dials are black except for the red one as mentioned above.

The red dial is supposed to count from 1, 2, 3……….9, 0; upon reaching which, the dial next to it occupying the 1’s place turns to be 1. This is usually counted as 1 kwh which represents 1 unit of commercial electricity consumed.

But in my case the red dial turns from 1, 2, 3 ,4, 5, 6, 7 and 0. It does not count 8 and 9, which means it counts more than what is consumed.

Is this the way with all the other energy meters out there or is it just mine?

Should I raise a complain?

Should I reclaim all the surplus money I have been paying all this time?

  • Call and tell them you might need a new meter and explain why. As far as getting money back …. you’d have to prove how long it’s been doing it.
