Popularity lowers prices and is self-perpetuating since building materials and furnishings in that style will also proliferate until the cheapest style for most common people becomes that one. The Northeast, Midwest and Southeast tend to have the most tradutional taste. You are more apt to find modern looking homes on the West Coast , the Gulf coast and the intermountain West. Technically, the common "ranch-style" house is modern and you will find plenty of those everywhere. It's all relative and how you define modern. Back in the early 20th century Craftsman style homes were considered "modern" and now they are considered "vintage and quaint".
