Termites–do I need to move?

I found termites/termite damage in the bathroom of the studio I’m renting–there’s a spot where the paint was blistering and just by pressing lightly I poked a hole in the wall. I showed my landlord and he said that it was probably a spot where the wood had rotted. Today when putting tape over the spot, I saw a bunch of larvae-looking bugs consistent w/ pictures of termites. Looking at the ceiling beam, there also seem to be a few signs of termite damage.

I am a student and am leaving to study abroad in months. Since I only need to be in this city for the next months, I want to try to avoid moving (as it is expensive w/ new security deposits, etc.). But if the damage is going to get bad enough that I’ll have to move before those months are up, I’d rather just do it now. How quickly does termite damage progress? would it be a bad idea/potentially hazardous to try to stay here for the next months? the area where the paint is blistering is in a line maybe inches long and and inch at the widest point.

  • If your landlord doesn’t take his head out of the sand his house will fall down around him.

Termites will take care of it for him.

If you only plan on months, you should be alright, but keep your eyes on them.

  • Don’t move just yet. You need to submit a request to the landlord for pest extermination. Most states have laws in place so that renters have some recourse if the landlord refuses to correct the issue. You may find free legal advice at your local library, just give the library a call to find out what days legal aid is available. Based on all the things I’ve watched and read over a ‘few’ years, termites will eat the paper layer found on sheetrock after they have eaten everything else they prefer behind the wall. At one stage in their life cycle they look very similar to black ants with wings and will swarm when the weather turns warm. Commonly they are the first sign of trouble people notice. There are some other very obvious signs of termite damage you can identify once you become familiar with them. Consider taking pictures and keeping notes to protect your interests.

  • Termites can do an terrible lot of structural damage to a location earlier than it becomes obvious and which means that the property can be valued at a long way less than is first notion. The personal loan company needs to understand that the asset has the expected value so they may be able to control their chance. A customer will have to normally make purchase conditional on a excellent pest inspection record. Or else there is also an unwelcome surprise.

  • Get a can of bug spray to kill the termites you can see. No need to move. When you pack to go over seas, as a parting gift to the landlord, notify the city building inspectors what you found. Then the next renter will be forever thankful to you.

  • Nope. You can hire a termite control firm to help you get rid of the termites.

  • It is definitely a problem for your landlord but you’ll be fine. Unlike roaches or bed bugs, they will not be hitching a ride in your belongings either.

Is there a way I could decorate it with removing the inside of it- there's a gas hook up behind it. Any ideas? By the looks this is a old gas fire heater from the 40's or 50's. it looks like there is no vent for the fumes. They were design that way. Unfortunately many people got sick from the fumes and they were banned. In saying that if there is no exhaust or chimney you cannot use a gas fireplace. Someone I know had this very same fireplace .
