  • Transpiration, also called evapotranspiration, is the process used to move water up from the roots to the leaves and is very important in moving water up tall trees. Because of cohesion between water molecules, water is like a chain running from the roots to the leaves. As one water molecule (one link in the chain) exits the stomata of the leaf it pulls on the other water molecules (pulls on the other links in the chain) moving water up the plant.

Thy xylem vascular tissue transports water throughout the plant.

cohesion, adhesion, capillary action are three processes that assist the transport of water from the roots of the plant upward

  • three processes that help water to move upward in plants are:

    1. transpirational pull

    2. root pressure

    3. cohesion and adhesion force
