What does it take to build advanced technology from scratch?

Let’s say that all the technology on earth disappeared. Nothing is left behind to build off of and no stored data with blueprints. Given that we still have the manpower and the minds that knew what they knew before the technology disappeared, how long would it take to rebuild society to what it once was? Does one man have enough knowledge to build a computer from scratch or does it take collective knowledge?

  • Definitely collective and progressive knowledge. Building a computer requires being able to make the chips; that requires knowledge of the etching and bonding processes and of refining and doping silicon, that requires being able to make a zone refinement furnace, that requires electricity (come to think of it, electricity is needed to operate the computer) and so on. Technology today is built on centuries of foundation.
  • try to start a fire without any modern ignition device, cut down a tree thicker than you can break with your hand

then come back and ask that again

  • It’s not just the knowledge you need; it’s the division of labour. In fact without the division of labour, the knowledge would soon become extinct.
