A computer virus is simply a malicious program… that typically infects your computer without your knowledge, and definitely without your consent. The effects of a virus range from deleting data and wrecking your operating system, to discreetly logging all your keystrokes and webpages you visit, to simply just being there waiting for a command from the creator to wreak havoc all at once. They spread by email attachments (spam your friends send you… “send this letter to 10 people or risk bad luck forever!”), trojans that hide in applications you download that you hope do cool stuff, and websites that take advantage of web browser vulnerabilities.
A few quick tips:
1. Use a reputable antivirus program. Even a free one like Avast or AVG Free are better than nothing.
2. Do not click on popups while browsing that claim they “found 132 errors, click OK to fix” no matter how tempting.
3. Use a strong, secure browser like Firefox and make sure you enable automatic updates.
4. Stop using any P2P (limewire) or torrents to find programs, games, video, etc…
5. Use Windows Update to set up automatic updates
6. Avoid anti-spyware programs. If you MUST, Try Windows Defender. Most anti-spyware programs are actually MALWARE!
6. Back up your music, pictures and important documents… try just saving them on DVD-Rs instead of buying some backup application… you probably won’t remember how to restore the backup by the time you really need it.
7. Every family has a geek. Ask him or her for simple advice, but avoid asking them to fix it for you unless absolutely necessary.
A computer virus is a small piece of software to cause damage, or harm to your computer or/and also to gain unauthorized accesses to your personal info, such credit card info, names, passwords and any other info you would not want on your computer or give out to the public.
