What is developmental Reading?

Teaching children how to decode words (which starts with basics such as identifying letters and all speech sounds) and how to understand what they are reading.

In understanding a text, a person can answer comprehension questions, compare two texts, discuss a text with peers, relate a text to their own life or use acquire knowledge from a text, make inferences, but basic developmental reading is a more simple understanding a text (what happened, who was the main character) as these readers are still working on decoding words. There are developmental reading classes in college for students who can read and answer basic comprehension questions about a text but to not have higher level comprehension skills, and there are developmental reading programs that teach kids to read from the beginning.

In a school, a developmental reading program might be a class for students who are struggling to read and need to learn the skills to decode words and understand a text.
