What is wrong with the air conditioner in my house? takes forever to get cold?

The air coming out of the vents is only very very slightly cool for the first like minutes, and only then does it turn cold like it’s supposed to be….and it turns very cold once it finally does. I can also occasionally hear this weird second electrical surge thing that happens every so often coming from outside when it is running.

A couple months ago, the person in charge around here called in a repair man who said it was something electrical and he put a “patch” on it……I’m not sure if he was the shady type or not

What are the possible or likely causes? Does this sound expensive? I need to know what to look out for

  • I do not agree with the missing freon remarks. My reasoning behind that is because you mentioned that it will at some point get very cold. If you had no freon or missing freon it would never get cold.

I do like the first comment of a compressor that looks like it starting to fail. The compressor is not turning on when you start the system but the surge you hear is the compressor kicking on. I guarantee that the system begins to cool after you hear that.

Have a tech check this out for you.

  • Under the heading of possible and likely causes of the condition you describe? Neglect. Bottom Line.

The evaporator is so filthy it takes a long time for the heat exchange to take place, plus, the compressor is failing. The electrical sound you were hearing was the compressor begging for help. (if it was a horse, it would be time to put it down)

The service outfit was not shady; they installed a hard start kit and bought it some time. It probably will not make it through next summer.

Do yourself and the system a huge favor. Go out and clean the condenser coil. Get into the air handler and clean the evaporator coil with a coil cleaner spray sold at most any home improvement retailer. Change the filter. if you are the least mechanically inclined, cleaning the squirrel cage fan will save you some cash.

Over the winter, start having contractors come out and give estimates on at least a SEER system.

  • Its hard to tell what exactly happened or what exactly is the anwser, but I am guessing that it has a failing compressor and they put a hard start kit on it. Again, just guessing. Hard start kits are used when a compressor has gone through a power surge or lightining strike and is having a hard time starting on its own.

As for expense, it would depend completely on the particular condenser (the unit outside) you have.

Any advice you would be given here would be unreliable at best without further details, Sorry.

  • it takes a minute for the air passing over the coils to get cold, it’s not going to be instantaneous. and the second surge is the fan cutting on outside to cool the compressor and keep it from overheating.

  • The gas has leaked out . If it just a small air con then just junk it and buy a new one as finding gas leaks can some times be near on impossible .

  • start with checking your return air filter then the service call is due , it sounds like its time for freon
