Nicholas Sparks is the author of the novel on which the film is based. The inspiration for the main character was her sister, Danielle, who died of cancer in 2000.
James “Jimmy” Everest died of bone cancer in 1992, aged 17. The Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Children was established in memory.
