Why can’t I play 1080p .mkv movies on my computer?

I’ve tried VLC media player, media player classic home cinema with the cccp, media center can’t handle it, in fact, the player that worked the best was windows media player, and that got all pixelated, choppy, audio/video sync got off. I’ve got a pretty good computer, 2.5 GHz core 2 duo (T93), 4 GB RAM and an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M graphics card. Why can’t these media players handle 1080p? Other resolution .mkv videos work just fine.

  • hmmmmmmm
    maybe the codec
or those media players just cant handle the data stream

  • After using VLC for years, I have to blame your video file. VLC has never, ever told me it wouldn’t play something, unless the file was corrupt.

I wish I knew what file it was…

    Check your codecs?

  • Everything sounds good…but I’m unfamiliar with the NVS.

A quick google search tells me that the NVS only has 256MB of VRAM. That could be your hindrance. 1080p requires much more processing than 720p, simply due to the increased amount of data. Your graphics card may not be up to snuff to handle the extra work.

  • Codecs. They’re what do the actual decoding. Using the wrong one will cause choppy, glitchy, unwatchable garbage instead of clear video.

You’re video file is most likely encoded in h.264. You’ll need a suitable h264/x264 codec, otherwise you will get garbage.

  • It’s possible that you’re CPU is getting overloaded decoding the HD video. You can monitor the CPU usage if you open the taskmanager (in Windows), and see if it’s heading close to 1% when you play the HD MKVs.

Are you running Windows 7? Then there’s some hope…

DivX has released a DivX Plus Tech Preview of MKV on Windows 7 that will use your computer’s graphics chip to help decode the HD video, so it’ll make your video stutter free. You’ll just need to have a supported graphics card, but the tech preview is free and part of DivX 7. Again, this is only for Windows 7.
