Can someone please help me with a personal problem? I was traumatized by math…?

I’m in 12th grade and I took AP calculus at my school this year…however, after less than 3 months, I dropped the class and decided to take it online so I wouldn’t have to face the teacher and really deal with my stupidity. The problem is, in 9th grade, I had a crazy geometry teacher who would constantly make fun of me in class & always tell me I was gonna fail, even though I ended up with a B that year. The year after, I had another crazy math teacher for algebra 2 who failed me and always told me I don’t know anything. Ever since I’ve been so traumatized by math(hence dropping calculus at shook and taking it online) I don’t know what to do. I want to cry and I feel so depressed every time I come into contact with math. I don’t even want to deal with learning it anymore. This feeling started to occur after those incidents with my crazy teachers in the past. The problem is, I’m going to be a university Pre-medicine student next year and I know college calculus is more difficult, however, I feel too depressed about math to even put effort into it anymore. I just constantly want to cry every time I come into contact with it. Please help me, what should I do? 🙁

Its your teachers that have traumatized you my friend not math. My best advice is, start fresh.

First, take some time off of math man. Don’t take it for a quarter or too, nothing is going to happen. You can still graduate in four years, do extremely well on your MCAT, and go to medical school if you don’t start higher level calculus as soon as you hit college. Just chill out. Take a breather.

When you feel like it, start studying again. But this time, I would recommend not to immediately take a course. Self-study for a while. There are many great free online resources like TheKhanAcademy which can teach you lower-mid level undergraduate mathematics. Try them out, and see if you can rekindle at least some of the mathematical fire which I like to believe exists in all human beings.

That’s the best advice I can give, and probably what I would try and do were I in your situation. Best of luck in whatever university you will be attending next year. You’ll need it if your hoping to become a doctor 🙂

Everyone doesn’t have the same speed of learning different things. On a lighter note, check this out 😉

So, start fresh. If your teachers intimidate you, stay away from them. Your decision to study online is correct. But make sure you actually start soon, and don’t procrastinate. The more you’ll run away from it, the worse it will appear.

As far as maths is concerned, it is a wonderful subject: The only science with no exceptions!!

Whenever you study a subject, always try to get the intuition behind it. Understand the intuition behind theorems. Analyse the problems : When you see a problem, try to solve it on your own first. If you can’t read the first few lines of the solution to get the basic idea, and then try again. And if you still don’t get it, read the complete solution. But now, analyse it: Why the particular method was used, When can the method be used,…
That’ll make thing much more interesting and easier.

And of course, there is this wonderful community out here to help you: Post your doubts here and get them resolved (You may mail your problems to me as well.)

    Hope this helps.

i’m a math major. i’m currently in the middle of finals…. i feel exactly the same way. i don’t want to deal with it. although i like math, it’s given me so much trouble, and i have a huge final in 12 hours and i feel like dying just thinking about it. but i know that later on i want to do something technical with my life, and even if i don’t, i know that i am proud of myself for rising up to the challenge. it sounds like you want to be a doctor. don’t give up on your dream if math is in the way. when you are successful and saving lives, your teachers will look at you and feel embarrassed for not giving you better grades.

It’s not math that traumatized you, but the crazy teachers. Math is a lovely thing, and it shouldn’t make you afraid.

You need to talk to your teacher, and tell him EXACTLY how you feel. Don’t be embarrassed about it, nobody knows everything.
It’s your teachers job to make sure you actually learn what he’s teaching. That’s what he’s there for, no other reason. Approach him after lessons one day, and tell him you just don’t get the hang of things. I’m sure he’ll have an answer. After all, you won’t be the first one by a long way, who didn’t understand maths, he will have come across this problem before, whereas you haven’t, so although you can’t see a way out, he will be able to show you.
    Best of Luck
