  • Check your policy documentation or ask your insurers. Some policies do allow that, others don’t.
  • An insurance policy is assigned to a vehicle, not a person. So you can drive a vehicle owned by someone else but you can only do so with that persons permission. The policy carried by the owner of the vehicle would cover you if you were given permission to drive. Your policy on your Civic would not be a factor.

  • You need to check your policy – I recently found out that my insurance policy doesn’t cover driving other cars which I was annoyed about as I thought that all fully comprehensive policies covered this.

One thing you do need to be aware of is that even if you are covered to drive others’ cars, you’ll only have third party cover. Borrow your father in law’s Mercedes and reverse it into your neighbour’s wall, you insurance company will only pay for the damage to the wall.

  • Depends on your policy you need to read it.
The cover is third party only if you bend the other car it is down to you and the owner.
The cover does not apply to any vehicle you own or are keeper of.
If you buy another car you need to add it to your policy as a Temporary Additional vehicle which will cost you.
As soon as they sell the car the insurance does not apply to them as they no longer own the car.
I use my cover very occasionally to move a neighbours car from my drive back to their drive across the road. They have a deal to leave a car on our drive when then need to.

20 years ago the answer would have been yes. Now it is not so straight forward. An increasing number of insurers are no longer offering that cover in their comprehensive policies. if your own insurer does still offer this it will specifically say “The Policy holder may also drive with the consent of the owner a motor vehicle not owned by and not hired under a hire purchase or self drive hire agreement to the policy holder.” on your cover note. If it is not on your cover note then you are NOT insured to drive any vehicle other than the one covered by your policy. You should note that ‘ignorance’ is not accepted as a defence if you are caught driving someone else’s vehicle without that cover included in your own policy. The Police viewpoint is that it is your responsibility to ensure that you are insured on any vehicle you drive.

I have to think that this is a grey area, if you buy a car from someone and drive it home safe in the knowledge that [if your policy allows] you are covered to drive someone else’s car providing it is insured by them, surely the minute you pay for it and take possession of the keys it is no longer someone elses’ car but your car.

My advice is that you take a minute and read exactly what your cover note says so you know for sure now if you are allowed to or not.

  • UK answer.

NO, as every comprehensive policy that includes driving other cars with third party cover states “not belonging to you” and as you have purchased the car your insurance will not cover you.

  • NO you CAN’T. the extension is to other cars that do not belong to you. As soon as you buy it you MUST get insurance on it

  • check the small print on insurance or phone them up i am 21 and ive found out i cant drive another vehicle on third party insurance till im 25

  • No, you must not own the vehicle.
