Who’s a better poet? Raena Shirali or Ruth Awad? This debate was sparked by a poem written by Lebanese American poet Raena Shirali in 2007. A similar poem, titled Chloe Leah or Raena?, has also been published. Raena is Lebanese and Ruth is American. The two poets were best friends for over 40 years. Their friendship grew stronger after they met at the University of Florida.
Ruth Awad is a Lebanese American poet
Ruth Awad is a Levantine-American poet who lives in Ohio. She is the author of Set to Music a Wildfire, which won the 2016 Michael Waters Poetry Prize. She was also recognized with an Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council. Awad’s work has been published in The New Republic, Sixth Finch, Vinyl Poetry, and Drunken Boat. Her poetry is often infused with similes and metaphors, as she compares women to candlewicks and harp strings.
Raena Shirali is a Lebanese American poet
Raena Shirali is an award-winning poet and author of GILT, which won the 2018 Milt Kessler Poetry Book Prize. She is the recipient of the Pushcart Prize, the VIDA scholarship, and the Philip Roth Residency at Bucknell University. Shirali is a Pulitzer Prize finalist, Pushcart Prize nominee, and recipient of numerous other literary awards. She has also served as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Muzzle Magazine, and she currently serves as the Poetry Editor at Muzzle Magazine.
Raena Shirali will read from her work at Princeton University on April 15. She will be joined by four other senior creative writing students for a reading, which is part of the C.K. Williams Reading Series, which honors the late Pulitzer Prize-winning poet C.K. Williams’ 20-year tenure on the faculty at Princeton. The event is free, and all are welcome.
