One of the long term effects was that ~7,000,000 years ago, desertification caused a bunch of tree dwelling adapted chimp-like creatures to not have any trees any longer. Most of them died as a result. But a few managed to survive out on the open plains. They eventually became expert at running and jumping and throwing, and began using stone tools to hunt animals. Eventually they tamed fire, left Africa, and then launched some Saturn-V rockets to let some of them walk on the Moon.
