How can I be successful in geophysics?

I am a student working on my undergraduate in geophysics. I would like some advice on things I could do to make myself more marketable and give me an advantage over other students. How could I land a job with no working experience once I graduate? What is it that employers look for when hiring geophysicist? I would like to work in oil & natural gas or in the mining industry.

  • Take GIS!!! That is the way of the future.
If you can learn some programming, that would be a major plus, as well. Maybe learn how to use Matlab or other computer apps used by geophysicists. If you can land a decent internship or research assistantship or something in the right field, that would look good, too.
I suspect real professionals would be able to give you more detailed advice, but I made the mistake of not taking GIS in undergrad and had to take courses through a community college once I realized everyone wants employees familiar with it.
  • If you want to work in the oil and gas industry as a geophysicist, then you need a strong background of seismic reflection method of prospecting or seismic in whole. seismic interpretation is also very important to you. you must invest a lot of time learning geophysical software and some programming language. In this modern world of geophysics strong communication skills is a key for survival in oil and gas industry. I encourage to start reading journals of geophysics in other to have information on the cutting edge information about what is going on in this sector. And lastly you must have in mind the need of furthering your education in GEOPHYSICS
