im in th grade what should i do as my science fair. plz be specific!!!

It can be anything you’re interested in. Though, try to stay away from the classic “Volcano” and “Air Pressure” demonstrations. They’re kind of over done. Try to keep it as simple as possible and don’t try to do too much. Do something that you can summarize with just three or four pages of notes.

Here are some fun ones I can think of…

– Demonstrate electricity by building a simple generator connected to an LED light. Be able to describe how the generator induces an electric current in the wire to make the LED light up. Back this up with equations from a physics text book, and calculate how much electricity your generator can produce at a given speed.

– Demonstrate how earthquakes work. Be able to describe what a “fault” is, and what the different kinds of faults are. Build a few foam models which demonstrate some of the types of faults that occur. Back this up with historical information about earthquakes in the world and the faults or other geological processes that caused them.

– Demonstrate bridges. Bridges are some of the most challenging engineering structures that people have built, and there are many different kinds which are used for different situations. Build a few models of simple bridges out of toothpicks and string, such as “arch”, “suspension”, and “cantilever”, and demonstrate how each of them work with some small weights. Be able to describe how the force of the weights is transferred through the structure of the bridge.

I just noticed this is in Botany. If you’re looking for a Botany project, why not try a study on Duckweed? Otherwise known as “pond scum”, it’s actually one of the fastest growing plants in the world. You could study the growth rate under different lightning conditions. Measure the growth rate at regular intervals and see if you can see a pattern, and then try to explain it.

This is something I’ve always wanted to do. I promise that if you do it correctly, you will probably win a prize.

Test the antimicrobial activity of hand sanitizer.

-make agar (just make unflavored jello, and put them in petri dishes, and let them solidify)

-pick a common household item or household area, for example a door knob or a penny.

-wash the doorknob w/warm water to get as much bacteria as possible from the door (try not to use more than mL, because you don’t want it to be too diluted).

-use a clean spoon (heat it up in hot water and let it dry and cool down) to separate the water into about different cups.

-mix in a drop of each different hand sanitizer.

-now put a few drops from each into different petri dishes.

-and make one petri dish where you have nothing but agar in it (that is the negative control) – to make sure there’s no bacteria just growing just because

-and make another petri dish where you have only the dirty water (but no hand sanitizer), that is the positive control – to make sure the bacteria would grow

-close your petri dish, and tape them to prevent contamination.

-take a picture everyday

and compare how much bacteria grows in each
