Plot

His older brother, Eric (Tom Everett Scott), is a Marine and has been sent overseas to fight in a war. Landon has no ambition, and is often in trouble with the local police.
One night, Landon and his friends get into a fight at a school dance. As punishment, Landon is forced to participate in the school play and to attend church with Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore), the daughter of the town’s Baptist minister (Peter Coyote). Jamie is an introverted and devout Christian, and Landon initially views her as a bore. As they get to know each other, however, they start to develop a friendship.
Jamie reveals to Landon that she is dying of leukemia. Despite his initial disbelief, he eventually accepts her illness and decides to stand by her side. Landon helps Jamie with her school work, takes her on romantic dates, and joins her family for Sunday dinners. Jamie and Landon fall in love and decide to get married.
At the end of the film, Jamie passes away in her sleep. Landon is devastated, but finds solace in the fact that he made Jamie’s last days special and happy. He decides to live his life in a way that honors Jamie’s memory.
