Advise for learning guitar..? (acoustic)?

I can read music and all having got high grades in piano and violin. I’d have thought playing violin for seven years would have toughened up my fingers but MAN THIS IS HARD!

No specific question here but does anybody have any advise that helped them while learning? (I know what you’re all gonna say PRACTISE, PRACTISE!!) Maybe considering how to get a smoother sound when changing chords and ohmygosh… that F bar chord! Nightmare!!! (and ouch my hand!)

Thankyou, much appreciated :}

  • If you purchased a cheaper guitar, it may have been set up very poorly with higher than necessary action. Have it checked out. But I agree, I learned the violin first and the guitar strings are harder on the fingers. Part of this is the quality of the strings which is not as good as violin strings, guitar strings have a rougher feel to them.

  • Hi there, Ive been playing guitar for around 11 years (im 20) and first things first, forget bar chords for now. Try learn power chords, as they are easier than bar chords but will also make it easier for you to learn bar chords. Find a song you like, and learn it, practice every single day practice practice practice

  • You should learn to play open chords more smoothly first. Learn barre chords when you are more comfortable with playing. To get the chord changes smoother I suggest you start of playing them really slow. It does help.

    And it’s true, practice makes perfect!
