………Am I an athiest?

I think it would be amazing if there’s an afterlife or life after death or paradise or reincarnation or any of the things described by religions. I have not “decided” there is no God, I just don’t understand how anyone could believe in God or gods or anything supernatural. I don’t like belief in things. The truth is the truth with or without belief i it. And since magic and God and things like that are inconceivable to me, I wonder am I an athiest or an agnostic. It’s not like I have “decided” there is no supernatural phenomena in the world, it just does not exist and how can you believe in things that aren’t there?

Am I an athiest; one who believes there is no such thing as supernatural.

or an Agnositic; one who is not sure.

It just bothers me that an athiest seems like the world for someone who has examined all the facts and has decided God is not real when there are no ‘facts’ because it’s all imaginary to begin with and too stupid to even argue about. If something supernatural occurs, it is by definition natural because it occurred. If it is ‘supernatural’ it cannot occur or be real.

Update:

Thanks for the answers. I didn’t understand what agnosticism was; the position that these things are ulitmately unknowable. My point was basically that I didn’t “decide” magic spells and supernatural gods don’t exist. They simply don’t exist with or without my belief in them. Did not know if this is agnosticism.

I cannot decide if I exist, I either do or don’t, it’s not up to me.

  • Ususally, if you have to ask, the answer is “Yes.”

For the record, agnosticism has nothing to do with belief or lack of belief in God. Agnostic means that you believe it is impossible to know whether God is real or not. I have never met an atheist who wasn’t also agnostic. Most theists are also agnostic, they just worship an unknowable God they know they can’t prove (that’s the point of faith). If you are not sure, do you act as though there is a God, going to church and following all the rules you don’t understand? Or do you act as though there isn’t a God until you know, staying home and watching football instead?

  • It seems pretty obvious to me that you are agnostic. “I have not “decided” there is no God…” “It’s not like I have “decided” there is no supernatural phenomena in the world…” That means you are Not an atheist. You believe these things are unknowable, so that makes you an agnostic.

I don’t know why some said they thought you are an atheist, accept for many conservative Christians, if a person does not believe in God that makes them an atheist. They just lump both groups together.

  • You’re an atheist and probably an agnostic.

“Atheist” doesn’t mean you believe in no such thing as the supernatural. It’s typical, but it’s not part of the definition.

The idea that agnosticism is some kind of middle ground between atheism and theism is a common misunderstanding.

  • Definitely an agnostic…. Read…the case for Christ…by Lee Strobel…. He used to be just like you and a lawyer to boot. Someone challenged him to prove using the Bible that God did not exist…and he had to read it to do so…it transformed him, and it will you too.

Have you ever read the Bible? Have you ever seen a real miracle? They do happen! You can say there is no such thing as supernatural…I could also say that there was no such thing as Washington crossing the Delaware River…because I was not there and I did not see it so it must not have happened. Just because we do not personally experience things, does not negate their existance. I suggest you ask God to show you that He is really real…and begin reading the Bible for yourself…jjust don’t take other peoples opinions as your own. Faith is a personal thing, a personal relationship with a real God who love you more than you know. You may not believe in Him now, but He still believes in you, and He created you for a purpose…and He wants you to discover His purpose for your life.

  • If you aren’t sure then you are agnostic. It is better to be agnostic anyway. They are more honest saying that they don’t know instead of saying yes there is a god or no there isn’t a god. Those people that give an answer either way all have doubts, but are not honest with themselves insisting that what they believe has to be undeniable fact.

  • I can’t say I know what you are. Nor can I say that I have proof that God exists.

What I can say is God is my friend. I know him well–at least, as well as you can know God, you know, as a friend. Since I’ve got a friendship with him, I’m pretty sure he’s real. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve doubted before–plenty. I’ve been through every hell valley of doubt you can imagine. But God always showed up and led me out.

It’s hard to explain, but he does things–all the time. He’ll speak to me, through various means, in such a way that there is no way it’s not him.

Anyway, I know this is not proof to you. But, if you want to talk about it, I would be honored to tell you more about God. I would even introduce him to you. My email is [email protected]

  • No dear, you are not an atheist.

You are obviously looking for something………

It is difficult for some to come to the Realization that there is something far greater than ourselves that draw all humanity towards a relationship with Him. A Creator, who sits High and looks down low. In this day and age, many will not understand, for they must actually see with their own eyes a visible manifestation to believe. We are living in a time just like the days of Noah. Those people heard of God. Some prayed to God, but did not see Him.

The Lord is not imaginary, He is Reality. It is best to feed your faith and your doubts will starve to death. Having faith is daring the soul to go beyond what the eye can see……….

The Lord is not magic, for there is always a magician’s trick, or deception……

The Lord is not an author of confusion, in fact He enters into the affairs of His Creation by invitation only………………….. There are signs and wonders ( miracles ).

Being an agnostic is more like being willfully ignorant. In fact, the 1st -agnostics were a cult who went around making up doctrines as they went. They chose to be willfully ignorant, and were quite proud of it.

As a small child, I would sit and listen to the wisest person that I’ve ever met in my life, my grandmother……….. She loved the Lord, and I witnessed many miracles. In her day, she was considered a Healer, even though she was a mortician by trade. She laid hands on people and they were healed……… She would tell people that to see a healing, do not look to her, but from her source ! She was looking for Divine Will to come into affect, not her own………….

My grandmother would say this to those that doubted the Lord, because everyone there would have to come into agreement before a healing were to take place………. ” Faith is not belief without proof, but trust without reservation. Faith is not a dam which prevents the flow of the river of reason and thought; it is a levee which prevents unreason from flooding the countryside. ………….”.

  • You put a lot of thought into this huh? just be a good person to your definition and im sure things will fall into place as they should. We will never know the truth until it matters the most anyway(when we are dead) so don’t stress yourself out about believing in anything or putting yourself into a category. Everyone is probably wrong and we all might wind up on another planet with talking dogs for all we know.

  • “I just don’t understand how anyone could believe in God or gods or anything supernatural.”

Most rational atheists will agree with that statement. I don’t believe in gods anything supernatural either. And no, I cannot prove conclusively that God does not exist, but for all practical purposes I am reasonably certain that he does not. In any case, our understanding of the universe renders God unnecessary.

  • Atheist and agnostic are not mutually exclusive. An atheist is someone who lacks a belief, any answer but “yes” to a “do you believe in god” question, and you’re an atheist. You can be an agnostic atheist, you don’t believe in a god, but you don’t believe it is knowable.
