Are there raw materials in the desert?

Ores of metals and industrial minerals are found in deserts. Large hydroelectric schemes make use of the vast quatities of water flowing through deserts such as Hoover dam on the Colorado River and the Aswan Dam on the Nile in Egypt producing large amounts of electricity. This water is also valuable in irrigating crops, turning the desert into a bountiful farm.
