Are there wild rabbits in the New England area (USA)?

Last night around 2 am I was looking out my window and saw 2 gray wild rabbits coming out of our scrubs. I live in a residential neighborhood. In the past I have seen other wild life in the neighborhood. (possum, moles, skunks, deer, fox, and bats)

This was the 1st to see wild rabbits in my area. Years ago when visiting Milwaukee Wisconsin they had wild rabbit everywhere.

Also, what type of Rabbit would be out in the middle of the night, rather a traditional rabbit during the day.

The rabbits had a small stubby tail and pointy ears. I don’t think it was a rat.

  • Eastern cottontail rabbits are extremely common all over the Eastern United States. New England cottontail rabbits are less common, but are obviously found in New England. There’s also the Snowshoe hare, although I don’t know that they would be in an urban area.

Most wild rabbits are nocturnal or at least crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk). I’m not aware of any rabbits (aside from perhaps domestic rabbits) that are diurnal.

  • Well, duh. Rabbits are every where. Especially in wooded, quiet neighborhoods.
