AUTISM CONCERN FOR 23 MONTH OLD SON?

I am just so worried about my Son. I have an appointment with Children’s Hospital Child Psychology unit but not until August. Anyway, my Son does show some symptoms of Autism. He toe walks, he will do what we call “excited hands” every so often if really excited about something, he runs along furniture or walls sometimes and lays his head down on the floor when pushing a car or truck etc.(but does NOT seem to be focusing on the wheels). He is in Speech Therapy and Occupational therapy. His Pediatrician referred him simply because if the toe walking and did not have any other concerns about him. They claim he is behind in speech. He has probably close to 2 words. Points to items in books or outside etc. and will say what they are. They said he has trouble with expressive speech where he can’t easily say what he wants. He can though, and has. Just not consistently though. But he’s 23 months! He also CAN say hi and bye but only does occassionally and not consistently. He will still chew on small toys or objects. He is affectionate and will cuddle. He loves to be read to or to look at books. Another concern is he keeps to himself a lot. He does go to daycare and basically stays by himself all day. He’s even sort of like that at home. BUT I have seen him interact with kids before and look and smile at them etc. He sometimes doesn’t answer to his name but usualluy only if he’s really concentrating. His eye contact is usually good, at times it is not. He’s happy most of the time and rarely throws a fit. The closer he gets to two I do see him throwing some but it’s not anything extreme. He’s a happy, smiley boy. I am just sooooo conflicted! In some ways he seems to be and in others he does not. I’m going crazy waiting until his Apt. in August. I did take him for an apt. with his pediatrician and while she did think maybe he had some sensory issues she did not think Autism. Does anyone have advice or have you been in the same boat? Did any of you children exhibit signs of Autism but end up ok? Help!

  • I am not a doctor, nor can anyone diagnose autism from reading a paragraph describing your child on the internet.

His language sounds normal for a 2 year old, as does most of the things you describe. Two is too young to diagnose a child with autism, particularly if they display vague and general signs. There is nothing wrong with a child playing by himself often, all children are different, and they all have different temperaments. It seems like you are overthinking this. Toe walking is normal for some toddlers.

My daughter is 6 and has sensory issues. She is in now way, shape or form autistic.

  • I’ve 2 sons with mild autistic features (dx PDD.NOS). All autistic children are one of a kind, however most do not imitate at a younger age. Neither of my sons at age 23 months might imitate nana if I stated banana, nonetheless my traditional youngster who is speech delayed does do that. My PDD youngsters nonetheless don’t point. They are 7 and 3. Even though it would not sound like autism from the above description, i’d have him screened by using early intervention. He might have a dyspraxia/apraxia or an articulation hassle. Also the headbanging would potentially be a sensory integration difficulty. So it’s feasible that your son will qualify without spending a dime speech cure and free occupational therapy or might be neither. Its valued at finding out the earlier the easier.
