Building on wet ground?

building a storage shed on wet ground. (inches of water when raining)

i plan on a sump pump installed in sump pit to remove the majority of water

i want to build the floor flat on the ground.. which will be moist but not wet if pump is doing its job.

my question is if im using PT plywood for the flooring can i lay the plywood flat on the ground?

should i put some kind of plastic moisture barrier in between?

thank you in advance..

i know this isnt the “right way” to build but would the PT plywood hold up?

  • that flooring isn’t going to last. if you need to stay flat to the ground why not raise the ground a bit for the shed? I would seriously consider pouring a inch slab on ground level and then sloping the dirt up to the slab. Wood will just rot.

If you’re really keeping it cheap then just dump gravel and tamp it down, build the walls on posts and leave them just above ground level. This will work for weather and security but not for critters.

If you’re bound and determined to use wood then I’d say still dump a yard of gravel, tamp it down, then put the plywood floor on top of that. Not nearly as good as raising it off the ground but it might not rot out as quickly. If you put it on the ground with a plastic sheet under it you’ll just be holding moisture in once it rains a few times.

  • No it won’t last — even marine grade plywood won’l last under those conditions. Much better to build footers of concrete blocks (or cinder blocks, in some areas) with special water resistant mortar. Then run stringers (don’t know dimensions, so can’t say about material — double X up to feet. Use treated material — the green tinted wood, and I’d recommend buying concrete steps (made for mobile home) first, so you know how high to design the floor.

  • My x metre workshop was build on wet ground & the concrete layer laid polythene sheeting down onto the earth first. He taped all the joints with a polythene tape & then laid the concrete on top & the floor is as dry as a bone even when it rains heavily.

    Cheers!!
