By Raena Shirali Book-length poetry workshop

If you’re looking for an opportunity to work on your book-length poetry, consider attending a workshop with the award-winning author Raena Shirali. Shirali is the winner of the 2018 Milt Kessler Poetry Book Award, as well as the 2021 Hudson Prize. As a writer, she has performed her poems in venues across the country. She also conducts craft talks on poetry endings, focusing on voices of color and immigrants, as well as contemporary voices. She has taught creative writing workshops and craft talks to Indiana University MFA students, Wright State University undergraduates, and a philosophy aesthetics work group. Each workshop is customized for different levels of writers.

The course includes two hours of individual and group writing and revision, as well as readings of selected poems. Shirali’s work has appeared in a variety of publications including the Boston Review, Nineth Letter, Tupelo Quarterly, and Crazyhors. She is currently the Philip Roth Resident at Bucknell University’s Stadler Center for Poetry, and serves as a poetry reader for Muzzle Magazine.

This workshop focuses on writing longer poems that tell a story. Participants will learn to use classic fiction conventions, including rhythm, compressed language, stylized line breaks, and attention to sound. In addition to exploring the techniques and conventions of long poems, students will be introduced to dramatic situations and how to apply them to writing longer poems. Raena Shirali’s workshop will provide participants with the tools to explore a range of dramatic situations that will inspire their work.
