  • No. Not as long as there’s some O2 mixed in. CO2 is in your system at all times (that’s what you breathe out). It’s CO (carbon monoxide) that kills you.

It’s obvious that you’ll have to do some research on your own to resolve this, because there are too many misguided folks who say it will. It’s an essential ingredient in normal respiration. Like I said… if there’s even a little oxygen with it, you won’t die. I’ll find a website explaining this and post it later…

Actually, after doing a little research, I found that CO2 is just the opposite of lethal. It is an essential part of life. Check out Wikipedia at:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_Dioxide

Those who claim it will kill you are ignoring the fact that it is in every carbonated beverage. To those who say it does… it doesn’t. When it displaces enough oxygen and you suffocate, it wasn’t the CO2 that killed you, dummies… it was the lack of oxygen! Look up suffocate. Chances are, most are confusing it with CO (carbon monoxide) which is very lethal. Check it out in Wikipedia at:

  • Yes and No.

Some of these people are getting mixed up with CO, a highly toxic gas which will disolve in your bloodstream and wreck all your blood cells meaning you can no longer absorb oxygen.

Large amounts of the air is made up of CO2 and you also produce a lot in your body it won’t directly hurt you. However if you replace all the components in the air with CO2 (i.e. just breathe CO2) you will die because your body needs oxygen as I’m sure you know. There is of course another way CO2 can kill you in that some of the large amount of CO2 produced by mankind stays in the atmosphere and stops heat from leaving the earth. This causes the greenhouse effect or global warming. The earth heating up is probably the greatest threat to the human race.

  • I’m going to go out on a Limb here and say “yes”. But not in its gaseous state. Frozen Carbon Dioxide is what’s commonly known as “Dry Ice” and this has a temperature of below 194.5 degrees Kalvin (-78.5 degrees Centigrade) so prolonged exposure to the solid CO2 would, in some way or another, kill you.

  • Yes, haven’t you seen CSI: Las Vegas?

    Great episode.

someone leaked CO2 (by melting dry ice) into a room and it killed 2 people sleeping on the floor.

When the CO2 reaches very high levels and is present in a higher concentration than 02 (oxygen) you can die. Suffocation pretty much.

    Source(s): CSI! yeah! 🙂 lol

  • CO2 is heavier than air so if you were trapped in a container full of CO2 then yes it could kill you. Oxygen has a relative mass of 32 and CO2 is 44 so it is heavier than air so CO2 will displace the oxygen so you would have less oxygen. The thing that would kill you would be lack of oxygen rather than the presence of CO2.

I asked my hubby he is a chemistry teacher. 🙂

  • CO2 is not really going to kill you, but if it is displacing oxygen then you will feel short of breath and if the displacment is too severe then you may suffocate. but it is more dangerous as a greenhouse gas in the long term. it is important to have some CO2 as it acts as a buffer in your blood to prevent your blood becoming too acidic or alkaline, so we actually need a small amount of it to survive.

  • Yes CO2 can kill you. When you breathe, you are actually breathing out the CO2 and taking in O2. If you CO2 level rises than it decreases your desire to breathe, your arterial blood gas levels rise and you become O2 or ventilator dependent. Breathing is actually an exchange of CO2 and O2.

  • yes if you break up c02 carbon dioxide carbon is a poison gas altho carbon dioxide is safer than carbon monooxide it can still kill its so deadly in shops you can buy carbon monooxide like fire alarm but carbon mono oxide makes you sleepy the unconisos then u die

  • Yes, the CO2 will eventually displace the oxygen in your lungs, causing suffocation.

  • Apparently if you were in a completely sealed room carbon dioxide poisoning would kill you before lack of oxygen.

May be I’m splitting hairs? that could be a new question.
