Can I do both? Veterinarian question?

I’m wanting to study veterinary medicine when I go to college in a few years.

I would like to be able to work with the usual cats and dogs but also exotic animals such as reptiles, birds and maybe even zoo animals.

Is that possible? to be a regular animal vet and zoo vet?

  • You can be a small animal general practitioner that treats dogs, and cats as well as exotic pets such as parrots, small rodents, reptiles, fish, etc.

If there is a very small zoo in your area then you may be able to arrange to work with them occasionally. But, this would be extremely rare. Most large zoos have their own full time veterinarian on staff. Being a zoo vet takes – internships followed by a year residency to become board certified. Positions are extremely competitive and you wouldn’t be working as a general practitioner as well.

  • ALL vets are trained in ALL species.

    Location determines client type.
