Can I take my driving test now?

I took my permit test and got my permit November 27, and it’s been 6 months, but my friends tell me that they need to wait til the 27th of May to take my physical test. Is it required that I wait or can I just go and take it cause i really just want to get it out the way

  • Hi there,

You need to wait full 6 months before you apply for your full license and take your driving test: http://driving-tests.org/california/#app… You need to get your 50 practice hours as well.

  • If you’re under age, you must wait 1 full year before to test the road test.

If not, then you can take it whenever

  • Hi JS!

I really wish you mentioned what state you currently live in, since the exact holding period depends on your age and state of residence, it can be anything from 0 to 366 days!

    Check out this page:

Select your state at the end of the page and it will give you more info on requirements in your state. Hope this helps!

  • You have to hold your permit a minimum of 6 months before you can take the behind the wheel examination for your license.

6 months from November 27, 2012 is May 27, 2013, so you have not held your permit for 6 months yet.

Once you have you still can’t just go and take it, since California does not allow walk in testing and you will need to make an appointment to do so.

Before being eligible to take your driving test you must:

    Be 16 years old

    AND

Have held your permit for a minimum of six months

    AND

    Have completed driver education

    AND

Have completed 6 hours of professional driver training

    AND

Have completed 50 hours of practice with an adult 25 years or older. The adult must have a valid California driver license and certify to the 50 hours of practice. At least 10 of the 50 hours must have been done at night.

To take your driving test, you will need to:

Make a driving test Appointment(s) . (Driving tests are not given without an appointment.) You may also call 1–8–777–0133 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday–Friday, to make a driving test appointment.
    Provide proof of financial responsibility
