Can I use an External Hard Drive to store all my music?

I’m a big fan of putting massive amounts of music on my iPod, but i don’t want that crazy amount of data just chilling on my laptop and making it draaaaaagggg…

) If I were to get an external hard drive, would iTunes be “willing” to go there for the files? (assuming I had it plugged in at the time)

) Additionally, if I un- and re-plugged it, would I get all of those freakishly annoying (!) symbols?

) And the moving parts in an Ext. HD stop moving when you disconnect it from your computer/power, right? so i don’t have to worry about a fly landing on it and the arm scratching the @#$! out of the pretty little discs inside?

I would probably just keep it on my bookshelf until I wanted to sync music to my iPod, in an ideal world.

Thanks a million for any help, guys 😀

  • I used to keep all my music on a external hard drive and itunes would have no problem in syncing the music on my iphone from the external hard drive . just make sure that drive is plugged in when you want to open itunes and sync music and you will be fine . The only reason i dont it any more is that i got a desktop and my music on that now and i have itunes on that not on my laptop

  • I’ll answer each of your questions in turn and keep it simple as there is nothing complex about what you want to do here.

    So, here goes:

. Yes it will if you point it there.

) Always stop any external device before you disconnect it from your PC or you run the risk of losing some or all of the data on it. Do this and you won’t get the annoying ! symbol.

) Correct, but I’m not sure how a fly would get inside it in the first place though!?

    Hope this helps.
