Can nursing assistants measure wounds?

Nursing assistant has been working in a wound care dept at a hospital and is trained to do measurements on wounds. Do you think it’s a responsibility of a nursing assistant to do? I would think it’s more of a licensed nurse to do because they go to school for a couple of years to be trained on this.

  • Measure it as in take a ruler and measure its dimensions?? Why would an RN need to do that? (or am I missing something). A MA in a wound care setting should be able to do that. Nothing in their scope of practice says they cannot.

  • They can measure anything they want to measure but if it has to be documented, it is the nurse responsibility to measure it and document and see the progress if it is healing, infected, getting smaller and blah blah blah blah
