First yes, any smoke inhalation of ANY type will cause harm to the aveoli in the lungs, the extent as to how much harm depends on the substance.
Second there is absolutely no point to smoking cardboard. Smoking cigarets or cigars will at least give you a buzz if its your first time. The cardboard will only harm your lungs with no added buzz or anything so its pointless. Also if the section you smoke has some glue residues that makes the harm worse.
Just go and get cigarette if you are going to try anything, or salvia from a smoke shop. That will give you a short euphoric feeling and its legal. Or you can try smoking those strips from the inside of a banana peal, I have never tried that but I have heard its similar to weed sensation. That is probably better than cardboard for sure.

If you are referring to the smoke released by a fire, they contain tiny particals that reflect light and also they contain Carbon Dioxide and other gases that some may be toxic (such as Carbon Monoxide).
If you are referring to cigarettes, they contain the leaf of the tobacco plant along with hundreds of chemicals, some highly addictive, such as nicotine, which is very addictive and is a supertoxin. They also contain tar and other chemicals that can increase the chance of cancer….!!
