Can you record a drum track with Avid Pro Tools Mbox with Pro Tools Express?

I am looking to buy this for my boyfriend as a birthday present as he is in a band he wants to record their tracks and do some other music production.

I have no clue about this stuff but I know he said that he liked it however I remember him saying something about the ports which meant he wouldn’t be able to record the drums but i’m not sure if he was talking about this one.

The band consists of 2 electric guitars, 1 bass, 1 electric drum kit and scream vocals. So I’m just wondering if everything can be recorded with a m-box or not

I know it may seem stupid but I don’t really know much about music production

Thanks for your help!

  • Yes, you can. The fact that he plays electric drums is what is going to make a 2 channel interface like the Mbox feasible.

Since the Mbox has two analog inputs, you could record a stereo or mono mix of the drum kit by plugging it into the line inputs of the Mbox. Simultaneously, you could record the drum performance to a MIDI track. Recording his drum performance as MIDI will let you play with different sounds and also split the drums out into individual tracks for mixdown.

Keep in mind that since you only have two available inputs, the band is going to have to record by overdubbing. Typically you would record the drums first (while the rest of the band plays along) and overdub the rest of the instruments and vocals.
