Can your OHIP card be used as ID?

I plan on replacing my red and white card for the newer version that displays a photo of yourself and when you were born. I only reason replacing my old one is because i don’t have any sort of ID Card when asked for ID numerous times. Thanks

  • An OHIP card (photo-type or not) cannot be used as ID, other than health card purposes. However, certain uses may apply (i.e. can be used to board domestic airplane flights within Canada – as air transport security is under federal jurisdiction).

Like my colleague Ray had stated, you can opt into the Ontario Photo Card (if you are over 16 years of age). The card costs $35CDN and it is valid for 5 years. You can also opt into the BYID card, although its sole purpose is to purchase alcohol in the province of Ontario. The BYID card cost $30CDN – however after age 35, you cannot get this particular card (the BYID card is only valid for people between 19 and 35 years of age).

  • Many places have accepted Ontario health cards as a form of ID, but they are not supposed to do that, as it is intended for health care use only. If you are over 16 and don’t have a driver’s licence, you should get an Ontario Photo Card. It costs $35 for five years.

  • I agree with the first poster. I work in a casino in Ontario and we are not allowed to use an OHIP card as valid identification. That information is considered private.

  • It is not allowed to be used as ID. It is illegal to be used as ID. Some people might accept it but they shouldn’t be.

  • Many places will accept it as ID, although use caution when using it. Don’t let it out of your sight.
