Chinchilla Questions?

My mum has recently agreed to let me have a chinchilla but only one, and there are some questions i need answers to.
1. Which breed is best Male or Female (it’l be staying in my room)
2. Is it true that Females spray and Males masturbate? (Plus any personal experiences of this)
3. Are they easy to look after? (in terms of cleaning, smell, noise ect)
4. Will it be alright if i have just one?

If you have any additional information feel free to mention it as i need all the information i could get.
And name suggestions for a Males or Female are welcome x
Thank you xx

  • Males and females aren’t very different as long as they’re handled REGUALRLY, once a day, at least.

My female Chin would go up on her forelegs and spray my dad whenever he walked past. We had a male who would only masturbate occasionally, so that wasn’t as big a deal.

They aren’t easy to look after: they need a huge cage, plenty of supplies to keep them occupied. If you have carpet, their hair will stick like you wouldn’t believe, as well as them flicking sand all over the floor when they bathe. They tend to be quiet enough but they can get excited and rattle the cage when they run about. They also squeak when they’re angry or scared. They smell a little, but it’s easily managed with regular cleaning.

They can live happily by themselves, but if you’re not going to be able to give it adequate toys and attention, a pair would be better.

I hope you enjoy your chinchilla! (Mine used to love a scratch behind their heads, so freaking soft.)
